The 2024–2026 action plan “Support for Innovation Support Structures” under Citeb Component 1 is funded by the European Union as part of the Réunion ERDF-ESF+ program, for which the Réunion Region serves as the managing authority. Europe is committed to Réunion through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF)
Through this “Innovation Hub” Phase 2 initiative, activities are being carried out as part of the regional strategy for smart specialization in the field of the marine environment.

These initiatives, designed for and aimed at public, private, scientific, institutional, and economic partners, focus on three main themes:

  • Aquaculture and biotechnology,
  • Fishing,
  • Environment.

These translate into four distinct actions, organized into the following components:

  • Action 1: Activities carried out for the benefit of Citeb users in the field of the marine environment (COMPONENT 1)
  • Action 2: Activities carried out as the implementing body for the regional smart specialization strategy in the field of the marine environment (COMPONENT 2)
  • Action 3: Investment tailored to the needs of expanding service offerings in the environmental sector (COMPONENT 3)
  • Action 4: Activities carried out for the benefit of Citeb users and as a key player in the regional strategy for smart specialization in the fields of aquaculture, related biotechnologies, and fisheries (COMPONENT 4)

For Component 2: Support for activities carried out as operators of the regional smart specialization strategy.

As part of Phase 2, Citeb plans to explore, develop, and adapt innovative approaches in the field of coastal environment to the needs of the region. The goal is to acquire and establish new expertise that will be made available to businesses and partners in Réunion upon completion of the action program and deployed to address regional environmental issues.  The innovative methods to be tested are specifically designed to enhance our capacity to analyze environmental parameters—including both the physicochemical and chemical aspects of water as well as biological factors—in the context of increasing anthropogenic pressure on coastal waters. In 2024–2026, the activities planned for this component include:

Activity 1: Assessing the benefits of using innovative sampling systems for monitoring water quality in coastal environments.

Activity 2: Mapping freshwater inflows into Réunion’s coral reefs.

Activity 3: The study of new biological models for monitoring coastal waters.

Activity 4: Evaluation and development of innovative methods for analyzing microplankton.
