Biotechnology
The marine biotechnology sector in Réunion focuses primarily on the commercialization of microalgae. These offer significant potential for regional development across a wide range of fields, including the food industry, biomedical research, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, nutraceuticals, environmental applications, and the incorporation of active extracts into industrial products.
Citeb maintains a collection of marine and freshwater microalgae and cyanobacteria from various ecosystems in Réunion and the Indian Ocean, the PHYTOBANK. Through this resource, Citeb’s missions aim to characterize new strains, identify pathways for high-value-added applications, optimize the preservation and security of the collection’s strains, propose and carry out RDI projects, and support industry partners and project leaders to meet their development needs.
Depending on specific needs and expectations, it may be possible to identify new ways to harness marine biodiversity for taxa other than microalgae. In addition, the laboratory is also involved in various projects on other topics, such as antifouling paints, in partnership with French and international laboratories.
Major ongoing projects:
-
Citeb’s 2024–2026 Action Plan: “Support for Innovation Support Structures” (EFRO Measure 1.1.11) – Component 4Through this “innovation hub” initiative (Component 4), activities are being implemented to benefit Citeb users and to serve as a key player in the regional strategy for smart specialization in the fields of aquaculture, related biotechnologies, and fisheries.
-
POMARUNExploring the biotechnological potential of microalgae from the PHYTOBANK (bioactive antioxidant and antimicrobial properties) and identifying new strains (both new species and species already on the market). POMARUN is co-funded by the European Union and the Réunion Region
